DuPont Dojo is martial arts school in Washington DC, associated with Kyokushin-kan International.
We train in the Japanese style KYOKUSHIN. The style promotes physical fitness, discipline and non-quitting character.
KIHON - KATA - KUMITE
Training focus is on the three karate components (3K): kihon(basic techniques), kata (forms) and kumite (different forms of free sparring). Classes stress on physical endurance and toughness through multiple repetitions. Increasing flexibility is also important part of the training.
FORM – SPEED – POWER
All three are important in karate and practitioners order their importance differently. We think the form is first to come, as the good form will allow for most precision and speed, which in turn will deliver the most power.
FULL CONTACT
Kyokushin is the style which introduced full-contact, bare knuckles, no body protection sparing (kumite). Our training is structured to prepare you for the hard demands of the kumite but also emphasizes on all the traditional elements of karate. Some people like to test themselves and compete, and we support that, but it is not mandatory if you just like to train. However, if you like to test for belts, kumite is part of the belt requirements.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
As we are a small dojo and much attention is given to each member, so feeling is close to personal training. Each student is an important part of the dojo and has clear goals to pursue, adjusted to his/her personal abilities.
ON GRADING/BELTS
Our goal is not to produce more black belts. Our goal is to become better karatekas. There are strong requirements and tests for belt grading. Belts are not given based on the time spent with us, they are earned by you. Progress depends on the effort applied. If you are only concerned for getting next belt, maybe another dojo is the answer. But if you focus on training and becoming a better fighter, we are here to help you, and belts will come even faster.
